The Jessore Sloth Bear Sanctuary is situated 45 km from Palanpur in Gujarat. The 180.66 sq km of forested land of the Jessore hill and adjoining areas is endowed with several rare and endangered species of flora and fauna. As part of the Aravali ecosystem, this is a unique buffer that separates the desert areas from the dry deciduous type of plantation in the region. Jessore hill is the second highest peak in Gujarat and the sanctuary is well known for the population of sloth bears. Other important species are leopards, Rhesus macaque, Indian civet cat, porcupine, fox, striped, hyena, wild boar and avian life, along with snakes, tortoises and lizards.
The Jessore Sloth Bear Sanctuary was established in May 1978 to preserve the flora and fauna of the Aravali ecosystem.
