It was the initiative of Sultan Ahmed Shah and operated on Fridays between Teen Darwaza and Bhadra Taar in the old part of town. Over the decades, the market found itself close to closure during 1941 riots. It was then reopened near the Siddhi Sayed mosque, then the old civil court, and eventually shifted to the Sabarmati riverfront in 1954. It has completed an impressive number of years in this location.
