Thol Lake Sanctuary

Brief History

Thol Lake Sanctuary is a nature lover's paradise located near Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It is a haven for migratory birds, providing a natural habitat for over 160 species of birds. The sanctuary is spread over an area of 7 square kilometers and includes the Thol lake, marshlands, and scrub forests.

The best time to visit the sanctuary is during the winter months, between November and February, when the migratory birds flock to the lake from far-off lands. The sanctuary is home to several endangered bird species such as the Sarus crane, flamingos, pelicans, and many more.

Originally constructed in 1912 as a tank to support irrigation for farmers by the Gaekwad regime, the Thol Lake has established user rights to its water. Today, the Forest and Irrigation departments of the Government of Gujarat jointly operate and manage the lake. In recognition of its significance as a bird habitat, the Thol Lake was declared a bird sanctuary in 1988.
